St. Remy





We went to quite a few places while in Provence,
Arles,  Pont du Gard, Vaison la Romaine, Aix en Provence, Avignon and a few others,
but none were quite like St. Remy.
Maybe it was because of the gorgeous weather and the way the sun hit the buildings, but honestly just walking the streets took my breath away.


The color of blue that is used consistently throughout the village is utter perfection.
I so wished we had chosen to stay here for a few days but for sure the next time I'm in Provence, this will be my home base.

As you can see it is impossible to take a bad picture here.

    I love the colours of the buildings and the shutters. It looks like a beautiful place to relax and wander leisurely about.
    How have your recent travels influenced you?
    Do you want to add some French touches to your home or add boxwood features to your garden?

      i'm not sure how my travels have influenced me yet. i think they make me want to live a slower life...if that's possible. but yes, i'd say that is it mostly. i haven't wanted to add any french touches around the interior but the exterior, yes...mainly boxwood!

    OMGeeee, dying over the blue shutters. You are so right! Color is perfection. And all the textures and shades of gray on all the chippy buildings. So unbelievably gorgeous. Yeah, I would definitely make that home base next time. Not sure I'd ever leave. Wow.

    I didn't hit St. Remy last summer, but it is now on my list! My greatest wish is to spend a summer writing in France! I'd better get going on that!

    Right now the Tour de France is taking place in France. I don't care about the cycling aspect of it, but the tv coverage shows absolutely stunning views of French towns and contryside. Check it out if you have access. I've watched for the past 5 years or so.

    Your photos are so beautiful, really your are a great photographer! Years ago I too fell in love with the blue color in St.Remy and other places in both France and Greece. While there I bought a remnant of fabric that matched that blue - so that I could have it forever. That color I now use as a staple in my wardrobe and home. My bathroom is painted that color and it is on many furnishing items. I love it that much! Oh Gosh! Your great photos make me homesick, I haven't been there for almost 10 years and MUST go back. What a great trip you had!

      I wish I could tell you a standard paint color. What I did was mix paints (I do abstract art). I mixed French blue - like in their flag with a deeper blue some white and a tiny touch of turquoise (if I remember re correctly) and had the paint store match it. I'm sure some of the newer colors available would be a close match...that was 10 years ago and I have a piece of wood I use if I want more. I'll try to find the paint store configuration if I can for you guys.. I have a can of it but the combo notation is covered by paint.

    Beautiful! I love the way that all of the Provencal towns and villages have their own idiosyncratic look and feel....no two are alike...yet you are quite right, St Remy is v special. Rx

    St Remy is also my favorite. The perfect size - not too big and not too small. Amazing market. Cute streets. And the best food shops - a mansion full of olive oils, the Durard (sp?) chocolate shop, the amazing cheese shop/cave, and a few other spots that I bought treats at every day. The town also has my favorite pastry in all of Europe, which is saying a lot. And I was sad to learn that I really could only buy it in St Remy and maybe a couple of very nearby towns.

    Janet, I disagree; I've seen a lot of bad photos of trips in my time. Your camera did well but you also have the eye, IMHO. If it's not a hobby, maybe it should be more; you and photography. Seriously. I am SO enjoying your photos; thank you for sharing!

      i believe it is a pale blue with a little green thrown in mixed with gorgeous provencal sun and beutifully aged. let's see if benjamin moore can copy that!:)

    Love these photos - wonderful how you've captured the subtle colours and the aged patina of all these buildings. Your photography really is stunning. I have many of the same pictures from holidays in St Remy - and while they're not bad photos - they don't in any way compare with the poetry of yours.
    Your pics also bring back lots of happy memories - so many times we've sat at the little tables in that square while my husband does water colour paintings of the buildings there. Magic place, St Remy - and so interesting that Nostradamus (pic 6 I think) used to live there - and of course Van Gogh for a time too, though as a patient. The market too is fabulous!     We stayed 4 days in St Remy in May 2011 at Canto Cigalo Hotel Charme (sp?), with a view of the Alpiles. Magic. We must have walked around the town a 100 times during that stay and it wasn't near enough! Took dozens of photos of the shutters and doors, sat in the square, visited the market and walked down the tree lined alleyway from our hotel. Vaison la Romaine was beautiful too as was Fontaine de Vaucluse. So much beauty.
