blueberry recovery smoothie*

i just finished a two week yoga challenge that pretty much kicked my rear.
everyday i came home and made this smoothie and i think it was the reason i was able to keep up and finish the challenge.

1/2 cup uncooked organic oatmeal (pulse in blender first)
1 cup frozen organic blueberries
1 ripe banana
1 1/2 cups purple kale
1 T agave
1 thin slice of lemon with peel
1 1/2 cups almond milk

just blend until smooth.

*no animals were harmed making this smoothie

p.s. - i want to thank you for all your wonderful suggestions re my allergies and my sticky situation.
i'm pretty much using them all!

  2. Somehow, without me even quite being aware of it, you have become one of my "mentors".
    Thank you.

  3. Hi Janet - Gosh, that looks delicious. I need to come here more often. I have been eating way too much chocolate (cheap chocolate, at that) and not enough fruits and veggies.

Have a great day and thanks for the inspiration,
    Deborah

  4. Hello Janet:
Well, of course, we are your prodigal pair who need rescuing since if we had been even able to manage all those Yoga sessions, it would have been to a glass of red [wine that is]to which we would have turned for support. The colour of your smoothie is so decadently beautiful that it surely deserves to be drunk....just not by us we fear. Janet, please come and help us!!!!

  10. Why don't you live here? It would be so much easier for me Janet. Meanwhile I would never say anything re the Sticky situation- your friend is Aware. Hope the allegies clear up. Nothing more annoying. I bought an apple mac but I think I need a degree in physics to use it.

Take care and I luff it that Kindness is always in style x

  17. There are so many healthy smoothie shakes out there, but I have to say, this is one I have not seen.
Oatmeal in shake? Must try it!

  18. I am a new fan of your blog - found your site looking for bathroom inspiration on HGTV's site - how funny is that? Anyway, I have been reading your older posts and it's so wonderful to find somewhere on the web for women over 50. I am 51 and am always on the lookout for fun fashion advice, as well as beauty, gardening, design, cooking, etc. You rock. And good for you on the yoga challenge. I have been practicing yoga for 5 years and what a difference it has made on my body, mind and soul. It's truly the best exercise out there to help age gracefully. It's the perfect complement to running - incredible duo!

  20. Are there any drinks that harm animals? Your disclaimer seems disingenuous and a tad self-righteous.

    1. any drink made with dairy would be a drink that harms animals.

    2. If cows/sheep/goats (and humans) were NOT relieved of their milk, that would be mistreatment.

      Delete
    3. it is not the fact that they are relieved of their milk but the manner in which they are treated and the conditions they are forced to live in that is cruel. you really should do a google search on factory farmed animals.

    5. Janet is right--you need to read up on how cows are treated on factory farms. it's heartbreaking! and cows that produce "organic" milk are not treated any differently than cows on a non-organic farm. They still live the same way, are fed mostly the same diet, kept in muddy pastures where they are often knee deep in their own excrement, and sent off for slaughter when their milk production begins to drop around the age of 7 years old. The only requiments that must be met in order for milk to be labeled organic is that it be hormone and antibiotic free. So if you are picturing happy cows running free over green rolling hills like the picture on the label often dipicts- that simply isn't the case! dairy farming causes MUCH animal cruelty and misery. if you drink milk you are not only ruining your own health you are supporting animal cruelty.

Perhaps the biggest nutritional myth of all is that which says humans need the milk of a cow to be healthy. Joseph Keon, author of Whitewash: The Disturbing Truth about Cow's Milk and Your Health, will show how North Americans unwittingly sabotage their health every day by drinking milk, how our obsession with calcium is unwarranted, and that the inclusion of dairy products in the diet may increase the risk of serious diseases, including prostate, breast, and ovarian cancers, Crohn¹s disease, and osteoporosis.

    6. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has a great deal of information on the damaging effects of dairy products on human health.

  21. I've never thought of using oatmeal in a smoothie and I love the idea. I took beginner's yoga years ago and couldn't hack it, I'm impressed!

  22. I gotta try the oatmeal in my smoothies! I love smoothies and I have a Vitamix machine and make them often. Yes KALE is wonderful to put into your smoothies! While blended greens may sound unappetizing, their flavor is really covered up by the fruits - it just tastes like a more mellow fruit smoothie.

Here is one smoothie i make for 2 people:

3/4 cup oat milk or almond milk
    1 cup frozen organic blueberries
    dash of vanilla extract
    1 frozen banana -sliced
    2-3 T hemp seeds
1 orange-most of the peel removed
1 lime--most of the peel removed
3-4 organic kale leaves taken off the stem
    2 slices ginger root--peeled
tablespoon or so of maple syrup

    3. you are so welcome janet--yes the lime and ginger give it a nice little "kick" and the orange adds to the taste too.

    1. it is everywhere around here linda. the farmers markets and health food type stores have it. it tastes the same as the green (to me at least) but the purple looks better in this purple colored smoothie.

    2. Thanks! I've been enjoying reading your blog (backwards) over the last week or two in my spare time. I'm up to 2010. You may think your life is boring, but I've never read anyone's blog from finish to start before! I'm 41 with one in college and one who will be going next year. Hubby is five years from retirement (we started early) and it's just so nice to read tips and advice from someone who has already been there and is where I see myself in the future...living simply and beautifully. I feel a kindred spirit in you!

  26. 1 1/2 hours of yoga every day...wow! I've been skipping my bar method class to work on move stuff...but once you start something like this and make it part of your day...you really miss it when it's gone. Your smoothie looks so good...and talk about healthy!

  27. Thank you Janet for all of the good recipes you send our way. I just made the sweet potato soup you made at Thanksgiving and it was soooo good! I am a faithful reader of your posts but do not comment. I could not eat this wonderful soup and no knead bread without saying hi and telling you this will be on my repeat list of foods. I can not wait to try this one after my yoga class too:-)

    XO Jeanne
