  3. Hi Janet - love your blog and have never commented before, but your white rose changed because, at one time, it was touched by another rose of a different color. We have many roses in our garden and it has happened to one of our plants. And I also have to say -- you have one of the best blogs and the most beautiful garden. Happy Fourth!

  4. Love this post Janet - what an eye! Is that old man single? I may be his second or third wife!

  5. Is it possible that your white rose has botrytis blight? I seem to recall that this disease can cause red spots on rose petals.

  11. Janet, I got curious so I noodled around on Google Images to see if I could confirm my guess. Your rose does indeed have botrytis blight. Here's a link to a forum asking about rose spots like yours, including pictures. Near the end an experienced gardener weighs in and explains that the roses have the disease. There's also some mention of how to treat the problem. http://www.gardenexpress.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=10681

  13. Yowsa, you packed a lot in on your time over here. And you went to Petersham Nurseries too. It's 20 minutes from where I live! Sometimes we cycle over along the Thames path and feast on their lovely (and expensive) cakes.

  15. I love how you wrapped all that beauty into a patriotic post....very fun. You sure did pack a lot in that trip and you took such amazing photos. I can't wait for the day I step visit Paris...hhhmmmm.
I meant to comment your previous post about the blue - when I painted my dining room blue, I told the guy at the paint store that I wanted that romantic soft/aged blue that's on the shutters and doors in Paris.....he told me "that's a blue only found in Paris and weathered with time." I still remember that conversation like it was yesterday.

    Happy 4th!!

  19. I so love your blog. It was a long 3 weeks when you were gone. I hope you will consider posting a lot more of your trip. There are many of us that have no way of taking that dream of a trip. So I love to travel vicariously through your posts. I do not think anyone would get bored seeing all those fabulous places. Tell us about the people you met. Your roommate seemed quite intriguing. She was gorgeous and quite the fashion plate. I know that must have been fun traveling with her. You looked really smart in your wardrobe. I know how hard it is to try to predict weather. I usually have the wrong outfits. Anyway, keep showing your pictures. We love them. I'm so glad your expectations were exceeded ..

  22. How do you keep your rose foliage so clean and shiny and free from mildew spots?? It's hard not to have that here on Cape Cod w/out constant spraying. Or is it simply just not that humid in CA? Those spots are a form of blight. Have you had lots of wet weather? You cut those parts that are effected and throw out, do not compost. Also wipe your cutters with rubbing alcohol to prevent spread.

    1. i've been lucky both with mildew and black spot. these old roses don't seem to get either. i live in a very dry climate so i'm sure that helps.

it seems the general consensus in the comments that it is a form of blight. it was isolated on this one rose so we'll see how it does.

  28. Janet, can you share? Did I miss? What's the story behind your cottage? Was it spun off from a bigger property, ala those gorgeous, stately homes nearby? We have a vintage
"mansion" on our street with a similar story. (Pioneers, founding-members of the town; family is still mega-wealthy and in the area; they have several of the biggest, most-grand houses and they gave up all of them in the successive generations which I can't figure out because they have so much money.) To much disappointment, this property on my street was "shortened" here on the hillside in the 1970s and part of the land was sold off which really took away from the majestic sweep of lawn and look of The Big House. They kept the guest house which is like a mini-home and which is a duplicate of the mansion, and then owners of the new "parcel" built a custom, Mediterranean-style home which isn't even remotely any kind of match for the elegant, original Tudor...but, whatever; things change; descendents have other ideas; reincarnations...

Just curious because your cottage is a dream, from the inside you've shown us, to your garden, what appears to be a lovely street, etc. ... it's so perfect ...

Thank you by the way for a great post; how I enjoyed it! I'm moving soon...consensus is that the prudent, financial thing to do is move into my deceased mom's home to be better
poised for retirement...leaving 1920s charm for 1950s plain, mid-century (sigh)...and her house isn't red, but my husband wants to paint her front door red! I have to think about this very hard...red should go with a house, like yours...

    1. hi vicki, this isn't the whole story and it's mostly about the rose garden but it gives you an idea of some of the history of this house.
